Who is Bakani Ngulani?

Bakani, is a Khalanga name which literally translates to Build, Yakhani, Vakayi, Agang..

Bakani who was born in 1993 to a primary school educator and entrepreneur; studied O Level at John Tallach High School where he focused primarily in Science oriented subjects. At A Level he studied at Midlands Chrisitian College and this time around studied arts with the ambition of being a lawyer. He passed both levels with distinctions!

Faced with the decision of which university and course to take, Bakani surprisingly joined Grant Thornton – PNA Chartered Accountants to serve as an articles in chartered accounting clerk. Once his employment was secured, he enrolled with UNISA to study his BCompt Accounting Sciences specializing in Financial Accounting. Through this move, Bakani was able to gain working experience whilst studying towards his degree; a move he says catapulted him into maturity in the profession and placed him in a position it would have otherwise took him 6 years to reach. Currently Bakani is doing his Masters in Business Administration to help him better run his entrepreneurial ventures.

Since leaving employment to follow his entrepreneurship passion; Bakani has received the following recognition:

Community Involvement

Bakani’s long term community involvement goal is to own a shelter and soup kitchen in Johannesburg and Pretoria CBD to provide the homeless with a place to call home nightly. Whilst waiting for his dream to come true, Bakani has thus far independently organized a blanket drive for the New Jerusalem Children’s home and through one of his companies has also donated various stationery and cleaning materials to the same institution. Bakani has also assisted several peers persue their studies after being faced with financial challenges.

There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return.

Brand Identity

“I want my logo to show my heritage, growth and identity.” –Bakani

With this in mind, the design team put together the current Bakani Ngulani logo.

The predominant symbol speaks to Bakani’s heritage. It is a map of Bakani’s region of origin “Bulilimamangwe” with the dot of the I in Bakani coinciding with the location of his exact home town, “Plumtree”.

Each tree has growth rings within it’s trunk hence the rings on the map symbolizing the growth that Bakani asked be included in his logo. Incorporating his rhyming name “Bakani Ngulani” as his identity into the logo, the logo was now complete as per his requests.

Charcoal black and rustic gold were selected to symbolize the combination of black excellence and high standards Tying in Bakani’s life to date from how he bounced in between study disciplines, got work experience whilst studying and how he had built a budding business at the age of 25 the best fit tagline for the brand was coined “Undeniably Unconventional” and registered as a trademark of Bakani Ngulani.


BN Business Solutions

At the age of 23; Bakani left employment as a chartered accountant articles clerk to open his own accounting firm BN Business Solutions.

He has successfully grown the firm from a one man bedroom office company to an organization with head offices in Corporate Park South Midrand and branches in Durban and Capetown. The firm provides value for money accounting, taxation and advisory services to SMMES across South Africa. The firm is currently expanding into Namibia and locally setting up a BBEE Advisory Division and strategically partnering to setup an audit firm.

BN Data

Being a millennial at heart, Bakani set up BN Data that seeks to address everyday challenges through the use of digital platforms to increase efficiency and aid in general convenience of day to day tasks.

To date BN Data has developed ScanIn which is one of the pioneers in black developed security integrated solutions. ScanIn provides a digital alternative to traditional sign in registers and comes at a fraction of the cost of digital scanners. The product has gained widespread signup due to it’s versatility allowing it to replace any type of manual form with information safely stored in the cloud and available at the click of a button.

Having been a public speaker and an integral member of the debate team since high school it only made sense to combine this talent with his experiences to share his knowledge with the hope of changing lives.

Bakani is an ambassador for anything that speaks to youth empowerment and given his age he resonates quite well with that particular segment of the population. By virtue of his career path he enjoys discussing all things business especially around the subject of compliance, accounting and digitization.

He has spoken at the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants, Nedbank in conjuction with the Small Biz Expo and at Colgate.

Bakani has received media coverage across all platforms including TV and newspapers for his achievements and thought leadership.

Running an award winning business at 25 in South Africa is not a walk in the path. Having gone through the churning process himself, Bakani did not see the need for other people to try and reinvent the wheel.

The book titled “In business at 25” speaks about his journey into business and resonates well with people in various stages of business and not only those in business at 25 as the title suggests. The book touches on various practical aspects from registration, marketing, getting the first client right up to expansion stage.
